Consumers

The GIW Portal has partnered with many colleges, governmental entities, industry associations and professionals, manufacturers and suppliers and developed entry level certifications for industry members and high school agriculture students.

The content is often taught in 16 – 24 hour formats spaced over days or weeks. In the high schools, programming may be offered in a 10 week period, depending on the school’s schedule.

Some description

Once the student or industry member has attended classes, studied the appropriate manual, viewed the videos on the portal, he or she is given a written and practical exam that covers the content. If the student/industry member passes, they are awarded a certificate endorsed by Auburn University at Montgomery, the Green Industry Web Portal and an appropriate association if available. At this time, there are several hundred businesses and government entities that have one or more employee with a GIW Portal certification.

The passing participant has demonstrated the understanding of modern techniques of practical agriculture, forestry and horticulture including pruning, planting, soil preparation, pest identification and management, proper plant selection and much more.

GIW Portal Certified individuals still make mistakes, but they have proven during the testing process that they grasp the key concepts that guide industry professionals in their work.

Please note that the GIW Portal Certifications do not replace needed state licenses that cover many areas of the industry including pest management, landscape design, landscape installation, tree surgery and more.

Before you allow an industry member to bid or begin work on your property you should ask to see the appropriate state license, certificates of insurance, workman’s comp and a business license for the city and county in which the work will be completed. We would suggest that you contact the Department of Agriculture in your state to verify the company carries the proper licensing.

Certificates of insurance should be sent directly from the insurer to you once requested; copies handed to you by a contractor may not be valid. Contact the licensing department of your local city/county to insure the contractor has the proper business license.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact GIW Portal Education Director Fred Kapp @ www.giwportal.org for more information.
